Every beach town has its well-known beaches and its local secrets. In Nosara, the secret is Playa Barrigona — a crescent of white sand tucked between jungle-covered headlands about 20 minutes south of town. It's not on most tourist itineraries. There are no signs pointing to it, no restaurants on the sand, and no lifeguards. On a typical weekday, you might share it with a handful of people. Some days, you'll have it completely to yourself.
It's the most beautiful beach we've ever been to. That's not hyperbole — it's just the truth.
What You'll Find
Barrigona stretches about 700 meters — long enough to feel expansive, short enough to walk end to end. The sand is fine and white, the water is clear with a turquoise tint, and the beach is framed by rocky headlands on both sides, with dense jungle coming right down to the sand. There are no buildings visible from the beach. No power lines. No roads. Just ocean, sand, trees, and sky.
The beach faces west, which means the sunsets are staggering. If you time your visit right — arriving in the mid-afternoon and staying through golden hour — you'll witness the kind of sunset that makes you forget to take a photo because you're too busy staring.
The first time you come around the bend and the beach opens up in front of you, you'll stop. Everyone does. It's one of those places that feels almost unreal — like a movie set, except there's no one around and the only soundtrack is waves and birdsong.
How to Get There
From Nosara, head south — the drive takes about 20 minutes. The turnoff isn't well-marked, so save these directions from Kembar before you go. Follow the dirt road until you reach a clearing where you can park — you can see the beach right from the parking area.
Important notes on access
- A 4x4 is strongly recommended. The road in is rough, especially in green season. A quad is even better — see our quad rental guide.
- Park before the river. There's a small river crossing near the beach. Unless you're very confident in your vehicle and the water level, park on the near side and walk across. The river is usually ankle-deep in dry season but can rise after rains.
- There are no facilities. No bathrooms, no showers, no food or drink vendors. Bring everything you need: water, snacks, sunscreen, a towel, and something for shade.
- Respect the environment. This beach is pristine because people leave it that way. Pack out everything you bring in. No trash, no footprints besides your own.
Swimming and Safety
The water is beautiful but can have strong currents, especially on bigger swell days. There are no lifeguards, so swim conservatively and keep an eye on conditions. On calmer days, the water is warm, clear, and wonderful for swimming. The southern end of the beach tends to be more sheltered.
Barrigona is also a nesting beach for Olive Ridley sea turtles. If you visit during nesting season (roughly August through December), you might see turtle tracks in the sand or even witness a nesting event. Keep your distance, don't use flash photography, and leave the turtles undisturbed.
When to Visit
Barrigona is beautiful year-round, but the experience shifts with the seasons:
- Dry season (December–April): The road is more accessible, the river crossing is easier, and you're almost guaranteed sunshine. This is the easiest time to visit.
- Green season (May–November): The jungle is lush and impossibly green, and the beach is even more empty. But the road can be muddy, and the river may be harder to cross. A 4x4 or quad is essential. The upside: there's sometimes a seasonal waterfall near the beach that only flows during the rains.
Plan to spend a few hours. This isn't a quick stop — it's a half-day trip that's worth every minute. Arrive by mid-afternoon, swim, walk the beach, find shade under the trees, and stay for sunset. Then head back before it gets dark — the road isn't fun at night.
Why It Stays Secret
Barrigona's remoteness is its protection. The rough road, the lack of signs, the absence of any commercial infrastructure — all of it keeps the crowds away. The surrounding land includes a large private estate (Hacienda Barrigona, a well-known event venue), and the combination of private land and challenging access has kept the beach in a remarkably natural state.
In Costa Rica, all beaches are public up to the high-tide line, so access is guaranteed by law. But the effort required to get there means Barrigona naturally selects for visitors who appreciate what they've found and treat it with respect.
